Despite laying out the welcoming mat for and playing footsies with the so-called ‘freedom convoy’, as well as routinely being criticized for its brutality towards people pushed to the margins in #OttCity, the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) is somehow getting an additional $26M windfall for each of the next 3 years from the provincial and federal governments to
expand policing in Canada’s capital. Once again, failure has illogically translated into more, not less cops. With this money, the municipal, provincial and federal governments should #DefundOPS and instead be #ChoosingRealSafety by investing in at least one of the following measures that would actually enhance community well-being. Ottawa residents living on unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin Anishinaabe Territory need care, not police violence. Join us April 2, 2024 at 6PM at Club SAW for a trivia fundraiser to support prisoners rights advocacy in Ontario. Tickets are pay-what-you-can with a recommended $25.00 donation. There is a full service bar on site to purchase drinks. There is no food at this venue, so be sure to eat before you come! Doors will open at 6PM and trivia starts at 7PM. There will be prizes for our top three teams and lots of prisoners’ rights merch available for purchase.

Proceeds from this event are used to fund legal advocacy efforts undertaken by the uOttawa Prison Law Practicum in conjunction with Prisoner Legal Supports and the Criminalization and Punishment Education Project. Some of the recent advocacy efforts by these groups involve representing prisoners rights’ organization Tracking (In)Justice in the Coroner’s Inquest into the Death of Solieman Faqiri and in various human rights based legal issues for prisoners in Ontario.

This time last year, we lost our friend and comrade Sarah Speight. The Criminalization and Punishment Education Project, Tracking (In)Justice and the Journal of Prisoners on Prisons have setup the Sarah Speight Memorial Scholarship to carry on her work and see through her vision.

SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTION

The Sarah Speight Memorial Scholarship was established at uOttawa in honour of Sarah Speight, who passed away unexpectedly as she wass completing a doctoral thesis in the Department of Geography, Environment and Geomatics at the University of Ottawa. Her PhD thesis was entitled “Jails and Prisons Kill: Geographies of Inquest, Redress, and Injustice in Ontario. Sarah was a fierce advocate for prison justice and carceral abolition, who was involved in several initiatives like the Jail Accountability & Information Line, the Journal of Prisoners on Prisons and the Tracking (In)justice Project aimed at reducing and, ultimately, ending the use and harms of criminalization and incarceration.

The memorial scholarship will be awarded annually to a student at uOttawa who is conducting research and/or involved in advocacy that advances prison justice and carceral abolitionism or who has lived experience of criminalization (including as loved ones of criminalized people).

Thank you for supporting the Sarah Speight Memorial Scholarship, along with research and advocacy towards decarceral futures.

Community Safety Involves Everyone!

Ottawa's Community Safety and Well-Being (CSWB) Plan includes six priority areas: discrimination, marginalization and racism; housing; integrated and simpler systems; mental well-being; gender-based violence and violence against women; financial security and poverty reduction. The plan was approved by the Ottawa City Council on October 27th, 2022.

A year and a half later the Office tasked to develop detailed actions, governance structure, financial strategy, and evaluation framework has yet to deliver sufficient results. They have failed to set up a forum to engage community groups and residents after dissolving Crime Prevention Ottawa. We know that social change comes from collaborative approaches and social movements. When will the City of Ottawa adequately support the pillars of the Community Safety and Well-Being Plan? Collective actions are needed beyond a plan with a coordination group that works with the community.
We are calling on the City of Ottawa Council to direct the Ottawa Community Safety and Well-Being Office to do better by creating an open community forum; increasing transparency; and funding CSWB priorities instead of police and reactive responses.
You can get involved by delegating or submitting comments to the Community Services Committee by emailing eric.pelot@ottawa.ca; joining one of the groups reimagining community safety in Ottawa; and writing your city councillor asking them to advocate for the CSWB priorities.

Are you a current or former peer worker employed at a supervised consumption site in Ottawa? We’d like to hear from you!

Participation criteria include:
— You work or have worked at a supervised consumption site in Ottawa
— You have at least 3 months of experience as a peer worker
— You have worked as a peer worker within the last 12 months
— You are comfortable in the English language
— You are at least 18 years old
