At a time when vital city services like social housing, public health, and transit that actually enhance our collective well-being and safety are being subject to austerity measures, take part in our email zap with @horizonottawa (link in bio) and tell members of the #Ottawa Police Services Board and #OttCity council to vote against Chief Stubbs request to bring the calvary to the ByWard Market.

We have had enough from the Ottawa Police Service in the form of constant requests for more taxpayer dollars as other city services are eviscerated.

It is past time to reign in the overinflated budget of the Ottawa police, axe their vanity projects like a new horse and pony show, and reallocate public funds to underfunded city services.

By-law have been aggressively suppressing free speech in Ottawa by abusing Noise By-law 2017-255, and have handed out a whopping 48 fines related to protests, amounting to costs of over $23,000 on Ottawa community members, targeting Palestine solidarity rallies, Trans Health Defense rallies, striking workers, and climate protests.

The current By-law approach, if unchallenged, poses a massive threat to Charter protected freedom of expression, community safety, and organizing in Ottawa. Megaphone and speaker use are critical tools for communicating to large crowds and should never be restricted for protesters.

Our demands:

City council has the power to make it clear that protests, rallies and pickets are exempt from By-laws designed for permitted events.

• We are demanding that they put this into writing by putting forward a motion to amend By-law 2017-255 to exempt protests and pickets from By-law 2017-255.

• We demand they put forward a recommendation to the Justice of the Peace that these unjust fines be waived immediately.

Big thanks to everyone who showed-up at the #OttCity and #Montreal launches of #HowToAbolishPrisons @haymarketbooks The discussions on the carceral present and decarceral futures were very insightful and inspiring. Feeling super grateful about how things turned out.

Thanks to @saw_centre , @octopusbooks, Rachel Herzing, Rachel Fayter, Alexandria Bonney, Lydia Dobson, and Dave Hennessy for all the work you put into the Ottawa launch. It was a great turnout and glad we could raise funds for @cappkemptville, Prisoner Legal Supports, and the lawsuit against the Ottawa Police Services Board through book & @CPEPgroup merch sales.

Thanks to @articulemtl, Sheena Hoszko, Rachel Herzing, Johanne Wendy Bariteau, Donnie Armstrong, Kriss Li and Joshua Piven for all the work you put into the Montreal launch. The turnout there was also great and glad we could raise funds for @cappkemptville, @PCPMtl, and the Termite Collective through book & @cpepgroup merch sales.

The ‘tour’ for the book is a bit of a slow burn with events scheduled between now and December 2024. We’re using book events for movement building by showcasing local organizing and raising funds for prison abolitionist initiatives. If you’re interested in having us come to your town, reach-out to @haymarketbooks Publicity Director Jim Plank (jim@haymarketbooks.org) and we’ll see if we can make something happen. Despite laying out the welcoming mat for and playing footsies with the so-called ‘freedom convoy’, as well as routinely being criticized for its brutality towards people pushed to the margins in #OttCity, the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) is somehow getting an additional $26M windfall for each of the next 3 years from the provincial and federal governments to
expand policing in Canada’s capital. Once again, failure has illogically translated into more, not less cops. With this money, the municipal, provincial and federal governments should #DefundOPS and instead be #ChoosingRealSafety by investing in at least one of the following measures that would actually enhance community well-being. Ottawa residents living on unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin Anishinaabe Territory need care, not police violence.
