Also support the email zap to city councilors to defend the right to dissent! bit.ly/emailbylawcantsilenceus By-law have been aggressively suppressing free speech in Ottawa by abusing Noise By-law 2017-255, and have handed out a whopping 48 fines related to protests, amounting to costs of over $23,000 on Ottawa community members, targeting Palestine solidarity rallies, Trans Health Defense rallies, striking workers, and climate protests. The current By-law approach, if unchallenged, poses a massive threat to Charter protected freedom of expression, community safety, and organizing in Ottawa. Megaphone and speaker use are critical tools for communicating to large crowds and should never be restricted for protesters. Our demands: City council has the power to make it clear that protests, rallies and pickets are exempt from By-laws designed for permitted events. • We are demanding that they put this into writing by putting forward a motion to amend By-law 2017-255 to exempt protests and pickets from By-law 2017-255. • We demand they put forward a recommendation to the Justice of the Peace that these unjust fines be waived immediately.

Feeling super grateful about how things turned out. Thanks to @saw_centre , @octopusbooks, Rachel Herzing, Rachel Fayter, Alexandria Bonney, Lydia Dobson, and Dave Hennessy for all the work you put into the Ottawa launch. It was a great turnout and glad we could raise funds for @cappkemptville, Prisoner Legal Supports, and the lawsuit against the Ottawa Police Services Board through book & @CPEPgroup merch sales. Thanks to @articulemtl, Sheena Hoszko, Rachel Herzing, Johanne Wendy Bariteau, Donnie Armstrong, Kriss Li and Joshua Piven for all the work you put into the Montreal launch. Once again, failure has illogically translated into more, not less cops. With this money, the municipal, provincial and federal governments should #DefundOPS and instead be #ChoosingRealSafety by investing in at least one of the following measures that would actually enhance community well-being. Ottawa residents living on unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin Anishinaabe Territory need care, not police violence.
