JAIL Hotline Report Calls For Changes to Complaints Procedures in Ontario’s Provincial Prisons

Last summer, there was a string of hunger strikes at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre (OCDC) that included demands for changes to inadequate complaints procedures at the jail.  The lack of accountability for human rights violations endured by imprisoned people at OCDC further deteriorated in June 2021 when the Ministry of the Solicitor General dismantled Community Advisory Boards in provincial jails across Ontario. On the heels of these developments and ahead of Prisoners’ Justice Day on August 10th commemorating deaths in custody and demanding an end to injustices behind bars, the Jail Accountability & Information Line has released a report documenting problems with and changes needed to address inadequate complaints procedures at OCDC.
