May 25th 2019, Red Deer Alberta, Forum on Child Protection

May 9, 2019 admin Event

Tens of thousands of Canadian children and their families are being systematically
terrorized, threatened and deprived of their basic human rights at the whim of
provincially-mandated child protection agencies, all of which are income-conscious
private corporations.

Check-out "The new Kemptville jail has been frozen Check-out "The new Kemptville jail has been frozen for four years. Here’s why" by journalist Joanne Laucius published in today’s Ottawa Citizen.

Premier Ford and disgraced Greenbelt scandal MPP Steve Clark’s proposed Kemptville prison isn't a done deal. No contract to build it has been tendered, let alone signed. There are no shovels in the ground.

We can still #SaveFarmland and #StopTheKemptvillePrison. More than 4 years on we're still fighting with our friends @cappkemtpville to win! Support the struggle today by taking the following actions.

ACTION 1:
North Grenville’s Mayor Nancy Peckford and council are in talks with the province on the future of the proposed prison site on the grounds of the former Kemptville Agricultural College farm.

Email the following North Grenville officials to urge them to reiterate the municipality’s long held interest in acquiring the site in their talks with provincial officials, instead of trying to find ways to offset the infrastructure costs that would come with new prison that would be otherwise paid for by local residents. The Mayor and the rest of council can save their constituents money by doing their part to stop the Kemptville prison.

jbarclay@northgrenville.on.ca
dosullivan@northgrenville.on.ca
kstrackerjan@northgrenville.on.ca
dwilson@northgrenville.on.ca

ACTION 2:
Building a prison anywhere is a terrible idea when we know it is more effective, just and humane, as well as less costly to #BuildCommunitiesNotCages to advance our collective well-being and safety through investments in youth education and programs, mental health and health care supports, and supportive and affordable housing. Building a prison on a site with acres of prime agricultural farmland, a Rideau River watershed creek, and floodplain in a context of food insecurity and climate catastrophe is even more reckless.

Email premier@ontario.ca and michael.kerzner@ontario.ca to urge them to halt their Kemtpville prison plans and to immediately launch a prison construction moratorium to allow for a province-wide consultation on how to best enhance community well-being and safety.

Together we will win!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE “Where’s Doug?” sear FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“Where’s Doug?” search party and rally to be held at Ontario PC Party fundraiser featuring Premier Ford and MPP Clark to demand a stop to their Kemptville prison plan

WHAT?
According to their website, the Ontario PC Party will be hosting a $1,000 per person fundraiser on Friday, October 11th starting at 12:30pm at an undisclosed location to benefit the Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes riding association. The party fundraiser will feature disgraced local MPP Steve Clark, who had resigned his post as Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing amid the $8.3 billion Greenbelt land swap scandal. Also in attendance will be Premier Doug Ford who recently appointed Clark as Government House Leader despite his past failures. With Clark and Ford coming to town, local residents and allies will be taking part in a “Where’s Doug?” search party to find the Ontario PC Party fundraiser in Kemptville where they will stage a rally to save farmland by stopping the Kemptville prison. Copies of a new report exposing the negative environmental impacts of the prison plan will be hand delivered to Clark and Ford.

WHY?
The Kemptville prison plan was announced by the Ford government in August 2020 without any prior consultation with residents or the municipality. Supporters of the campaign to stop the Kemptville prison are fighting to halt the facility from being built on the 178-acre property that includes prime agricultural land and existing farm buildings purposely being left idled by the province, a floodplain slated to be paved over for the project, as well as a Rideau River watershed creek and a number of at-risk species that would be harmed if the plan moves forward. This prison does not belong in Kemptville in a time of food insecurity and climate catastrophe or in any backyard given the proven and costly failures of imprisonment. It needs to be stopped.

We have had enough from the Ottawa Police Service in the form of constant requests for more taxpayer dollars as other city services are eviscerated.

It is past time to reign in the overinflated budget of the Ottawa police, axe their vanity projects like a new horse and pony show, and reallocate public funds to underfunded city services.

CPEP stands firmly against the criminalization and CPEP stands firmly against the criminalization and illegalization of Palestine solidarity efforts.

Join us and many other groups in #OttCity for the "Defend the Right to Dissent!" rally at city hall on May 22 at 6:30pm. Also support the email zap to city councilors to defend the right to dissent! bit.ly/emailbylawcantsilenceus

By-law have been aggressively suppressing free speech in Ottawa by abusing Noise By-law 2017-255, and have handed out a whopping 48 fines related to protests, amounting to costs of over $23,000 on Ottawa community members, targeting Palestine solidarity rallies, Trans Health Defense rallies, striking workers, and climate protests.

The current By-law approach, if unchallenged, poses a massive threat to Charter protected freedom of expression, community safety, and organizing in Ottawa. Megaphone and speaker use are critical tools for communicating to large crowds and should never be restricted for protesters.

Our demands:

City council has the power to make it clear that protests, rallies and pickets are exempt from By-laws designed for permitted events.

• We are demanding that they put this into writing by putting forward a motion to amend By-law 2017-255 to exempt protests and pickets from By-law 2017-255.

• We demand they put forward a recommendation to the Justice of the Peace that these unjust fines be waived immediately.
Stop the Rideau Cop Shop! This is not a community Stop the Rideau Cop Shop! This is not a community centre and has been created to protect capital and push people to the margins.

Police are targeting ByWard residents and Ottawa community members with heighted surveillance and crackdowns in the Market. Policing is not the solution to social and economic problems in so-called Ottawa.

Alternatives to cop shop that actually keep us safe: Education & Employment, Affordable Housing, Mental Health & Well-Being, Transformative Justice, and Violence Prevention.
We need your support by delegating at Police Services Board meetings, speaking out publicly, and rejecting the cop shop and core strategy!

A message from @cpepgroup’s Justin Piché: Big A message from @cpepgroup’s Justin Piché:

Big thanks to everyone who showed-up at the #OttCity and #Montreal launches of #HowToAbolishPrisons @haymarketbooks The discussions on the carceral present and decarceral futures were very insightful and inspiring. Feeling super grateful about how things turned out.

Thanks to @saw_centre , @octopusbooks, Rachel Herzing, Rachel Fayter, Alexandria Bonney, Lydia Dobson, and Dave Hennessy for all the work you put into the Ottawa launch. It was a great turnout and glad we could raise funds for @cappkemptville, Prisoner Legal Supports, and the lawsuit against the Ottawa Police Services Board through book & @CPEPgroup merch sales.

Thanks to @articulemtl, Sheena Hoszko, Rachel Herzing, Johanne Wendy Bariteau, Donnie Armstrong, Kriss Li and Joshua Piven for all the work you put into the Montreal launch. The turnout there was also great and glad we could raise funds for @cappkemptville, @PCPMtl, and the Termite Collective through book & @cpepgroup merch sales.

The ‘tour’ for the book is a bit of a slow burn with events scheduled between now and December 2024. We’re using book events for movement building by showcasing local organizing and raising funds for prison abolitionist initiatives. If you’re interested in having us come to your town, reach-out to @haymarketbooks Publicity Director Jim Plank (jim@haymarketbooks.org) and we’ll see if we can make something happen. Here are our upcoming events in the next few weeks.
