COVID in Prisons: Digital Action and Press Conference Dec 21

We are outraged in the wake of major COVID-19 outbreaks at Toronto South Detention Centre (TSDC) and Joyceville Institution in Kingston. Despite the calls to reduce the prison population, the Ministry has been ignoring public health measures and resumed increasing the prison population while still in the midst of the pandemic, putting prisoners’ lives at risk.

We now know that there are 54 new active COVID-19 cases at the Toronto South Detention Centre and 80 new active COVID-19 cases at Joyceville Institution. At both of these institutions, prisoners have signalled that there are many more cases than are being reported.
On Monday, December 21, we will be gathering with former prisoners, people with loved ones inside and frontline workers to shed light on the conditions inside during the pandemic.
